UDL in the Drama/Theatre Classroom - Video Overview

The framework table below includes ideas on how to customize and adjust a seventh grade drama/theatre lesson that focuses on the creation and performance of a script through the characterization of sock puppets. The lesson includes standards 7.CR.1.3, 7.CR.2.2,  7.PR.1.2, 7.PR.2.1, and 7.PR.3.1. Instruction includes a warm-up, group work on the concept of adapting a script from a book, discussion to further student understanding of constructing original sock puppets, a vocalization/characterization drama game, and an exit ticket. As the teacher prepared the lesson, the framework below guided their planning and helped ensure all students would have access and be able to participate in a meaningful, challenging learning opportunity.

Multiple Means of Engagement

Multiple Means of Representation

Multiple Means of Action & Expression

Access

Options for Recruiting Interest

  • Allow student-created groups.

  • Give students the choice in books used for adaptations.

  • Allow choice and freedom in the creation and characterization of the sock puppets.

Options for Perception

  • Provide examples of book-to-script formatting.

  • Compose a book-to-script example as a class.

  • Offer picture instruction steps for the construction of puppets.

Options for Physical Action

  • Give students the option of handwritten or typed scripts.

  • Use script writing software to assist in the writing of the scripts.

  • Allow usage of talk-to-text technology.

  • Have premade puppets readily available for students who may need to see an example or who may be unable to construct one themselves.

Build

Options for Sustaining Effort & Persistence

  • Require peer evaluated feedback at the end of the project to sustain the effort of all group members throughout the project.

  • Have groups contact another class or group to attend their final performance.

  • Have specific jobs for each group member to perform throughout the writing process.

Options for Language and Symbols

  • Encourage a cultural element by requiring the adaptations to be folk tales or stories from other countries and include research about the country/culture of origin.

Options for Expression & Communication

  • Give groups the option to perform live or to video their performance.

Internalize

Options for Self-Regulation

  • Require self -evaluations at the end of the unit that encourages self-reflection throughout the unit.

  • Exit tickets are geared toward self-evaluation for each day’s work.

Options for Comprehension

  • Introduce sock puppets in character to the class.

  • Perform the final product to a class or group.

  • Watch filmed performances.

Options for Executive Function

  • Provide project timeline and checklist.

  • Students provide a “costume” sketch for the puppet prior to construction.

  • Create a “Writer’s Workshop” process for the adaptation of the book-to-script.
